I’m a firm believer in action being affirmative. I am NOT a believer in “Affirmative Action”. I’m one of those oddballs who thinks it shouldn’t matter what color your skin is, which church you go to, or your sexual orientation. If you are qualified to do a job, or get into a college, then by George, GO FOR IT! I also don’t think there should even be a slot on any application for race…..period!
GOP group at BU offers aid to whites
Boston University’s Republican students group has started a scholarship for white students, to spark debate about race-based programs.
That should do it, alright!
“We are trying to convey the absurdity of any race-based scholarship,” said Joseph Mroszczyk, a senior from Danvers who is president of the university’s College Republicans. “I don’t think race should be part of any scholarship. It should be based on merit or economic need.”
Absolutely!
The scholarship requires the recipient to be at least one quarter white and to have at least a 3.2 grade point average. Applicants have to submit a photo of themselves and write two short essays about their race. The first question asks applicants to describe their ancestry and the other, what it means to be a Caucasian-American today.
(…)
The note also says race-based scholarships and other affirmative action policies send a message to members of minority groups that they are inferior and require special accommodations to be raised to the same level as others.
I do not believe anyone is inferior because of race, national origin, religion, etc. What makes a person inferior to anyone is themselves!
The scholarship has sparked quite a debate, which was it’s intention. Question: Does the United Negro College Fund award scholarships to non-blacks? Is there a Miss White America? That is just as ridiculous as this “White only” scholarship.
If you have two students, one has a 3.2 GPA, the other has a 3.9 GPA. The 3.2 student isn’t involved in extra curricular activities; the 3.9 has had leadership roles in various school organizations. The 3.2 student is from a middle, to upper middle class family, the 3.9 comes from a more “humble” background. Which student do you think SHOULD get the scholarship? But what if the 3.2 is black and the 3.9 is not?
Merit and character….NOT color should be the guideline!
