A Bumper Sticker: “I Love My Country, I Fear My Government”

Gov. Jim Doyle’s latest two-year budget proposal is ambitious and mostly practical.

Practical? To whom?

The ambition can be seen in his efforts to provide access to health insurance to 98% of Wisconsinites, to expand the state’s Medicaid program, to ban smoking statewide and in his focus on the roads and infrastructure vital to the state’s economic growth.

When did it become the job of any government, local, state or national, to provide health insurance for anyone? Banning smoking? I don’t need a nanny. It’s also not the job of any government to ban a legal substance in private businesses. Roads? Well, roads are needed to get from point A to point B. Perhaps if the governor had left those funds alone, there wouldn’t be an issue?

The governor and Legislature must work together to arrive at equitable funding for necessary programs. They should operate under the basic assumption that Wisconsin must not slide or remain static in providing services, the need for which will only increase in the future.

Working together would be nice, if they’d stick to what the government was originally formed to do, instead of shoving their noses in our pockets, bedrooms and cars.
