EU agrees to 20% cut in CO2 by 2020

EU environment ministers said that they would cut overall carbon dioxide emissions 20 per cent by 2020 and were ready to go to 30 per cent if other industrialised nations would match European efforts to curb global warming.

I’ll repeat…we aren’t that damn important in the scheme of things!

German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel, who led the talks, said his country was prepared to go even further, saying the German parliament had already backed a 40 per cent cut.

That’s all well and good when you have serious public transportation already. There is a great train system all over Europe, except in Ireland. Here in the U.S., we don’t have that “luxury”. We’d have to tear down a good chunk of most cities to put in such transportation. We’re a tad bit more independent than the Europeans. Let’s face it, we love our cars!

Gabriel said environment ministers would revisit an attempt by energy ministers to fix a binding 20 per cent target for all energy to be generated from renewable sources by 2020, but said he did not expect a final decision.

I’m all for alternative sources of energy. But have you noticed that the “environmentalist” types refuse to allow such alternatives to go forward? They want wind power, but block every effort to built those windmills that would generate energy. They want clean sources of energy, but when was the last nuclear power plant built? The Europeans have been able to built these alternate sources.

EU leaders meet in March to fix Europe’s general strategy to turn itself into a low-carbon economy, weaning itself off imported oil and natural gas, cutting energy consumption and doing more to combat climate change.

We are such an arrogant species to think we have any effect, whatsoever, on the bloomin’ climate! Get over yourselves!!
