Seymour boys advance to state

Matt Hackl scored 30 points and Seymour recovered from a five-point halftime deficit to beat Waupun 58-55 Saturday to win the WIAA Divsion 2 boys’ basketball sectional at the Brown County Arena.

The Thunder (22-3), which is making its eighth straight state tournament trip, will play in the Division 2 state semifinals at 1:35 p.m. Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Seymour took the lead for good at 33-31 with 1:35 left in the third quarter and led by as many as nine points early in the final period. The Warriors (21-3), however, came back in the fourth quarter to close to within 57-55 with 28 seconds left.

Marc Leisgang added 12 points and Brandon Kuchta had 10 for Seymour, which has reached the state championship game each of the past seven years.

Junior guard Ryan Rasmussen led Waupun with 20 points.

Ok, not sad for Seymour. Congratulations to them. But sad for Waupun. Maybe next year.
