Police: At Least 22 Dead After Virginia Tech University Shooting

At least 22 are dead and another 21 are wounded after a shooting at Virginia Tech University Monday morning, police said.

Campus police said there was only one shooter and he is now dead. They are unsure if the shooter was a student and it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

“The university was struck today with a tragedy of monumental proportions,” Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said during a press conference shortly after noon. “The university is shocked and horrified that this would befall our campus … I cannot begin to convey my own personal sense of loss over this senseless of such an incomprehensible and heinous act.”

It was the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history.

I cannot even begin to express the sorrow I feel right now. Memories of the incident at the University of Texas hit me first. That was bad. This is worse. Mr. Ol’ Broad and I would like to extent our prayers for the families of those affected, directly, and for all of us, who are affected in the broader sense.

It strikes me that this is an act of terrorism. It may not be religion related, but it is terrorism, none the less.

UPDATE: 32 dead.

2nd UPDATE: 33 dead. I really pray the numbers do not rise. I’ve heard some of the more ignorant questions coming from the mouths of reporters.

  2. It strikes me that this is an act of terrorism

An intresting choice of words. And I find myself agreeing with that sentiment. I think far too often we look at an instances like this, or Columbine and look to shrug it off as the working of some deranged troubled soul, rather then a cold calculated act of a terrorist.

  3. If the intent of terrorists is to create terror, then this definitely falls into that category.
