Secret Service Assigns Protection to Senator Barack Obama

The Secret Service has assigned a security detail to Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to FOX News on Thursday.

A DHS official said that a request came from the candidate but would not say anything about the reason for the protection or the nature of any threat(s).

When I heard about this on the radio, I was a tad disturbed that there would be a need to make such a request.

Obama’s campaign will not elaborate on specific details, but FOX News has learned that the request did not emerge from a singular reason, but a combination of considerations, including the logistical and security concerns associated with Obama’s attending two 20,000-plus person rallies in recent weeks and his rising popularity. Obama’s being a high-profile African-American running for the presidency was also taken into consideration before for the formal request was made.

I have to ask. Who is paying for this protection? Isn’t the Secret Service paid for by the American taxpayer? Isn’t Mr. Obama wealthy enough to pay for his own security? I have a serious problem with this whole thing. I do not wish the man any harm, but I also do not want to have to pay for his security, especially since he hasn’t won the Democrat Party’s official nomination.

Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren would not provide details of what led to the extra security, but said he was not aware of it being “based on any threat.”

If there is no specific threat, then why the request? And why was it honored?

It’s the earliest security assignment for a candidate in a presidential campaign. Usually protection is not provided until a party chooses its nominee, however, Sen. Hillary Clinton, another Democratic candidate, has Secret Service detail because she is a former first lady.

I can understand the Secret Service protection for the Hildebeast, but I’m having a real problem paying for Obama’s.

  1. Apparently, we posted our articles at almost the same time…

Obama and his protection are paid for by US, you, me and all the taxpayers of this nation…

And yeah, it pisses me off too…

  2. We are paying these guys whether they are protecting Obama or sitting on their butts at the office. It is not like they had to hire extra guys to do this. It has been standard practice since Robert Kennedy’s assassination to protect candidates, even in the primaries who might need it. This includes both Republicans and Democrats. The only difference is this happening sooner than it might otherwise. But, that is partly because campaigning has begun earlier and partly because there are apparently credible threats. I would rather than man be protected and allowed to present his views for the American public to reject than the American public denied a choice because of the assassination of a candidate.

  5. My apologies to Fred and RS. I kind of lost it there for a minute. 🙂

If there was a specific threat, I could kind of understand. But since there isn’t, I have a problem. Until the if and/or when he gets the nomination, he can surely afford his own security team, can’t he? I mean, shoot, seems you can’t be a politician these days unless you have big bucks.

  6. Tihs is unconfirmed, but apparently a french blog has a specfic threat. I am in the better safe than sorry camp. Like I said, the candidates have traditionally gotten protectoin even before the party convention, this is just earlier than normal is all.

Without a link, this is nothing but a rumor, confirmed or not…

  8. What the heck do the French have to squawk about in OUR politics? They have enough problems of their own. 🙂
