An Ol’ Broad’s Ramblings

My Day

Filed under: In Tennessee, Stuff — olbroad @ 10:12

I’ve had a really long day.  I got a lot accomplished and things are progressing for the big move.  Maybe, in a couple of weeks, we’ll have something that resembles a yard, instead of an abandoned field?  One can only hope, cuz yards ain’t cheap!

While out running around, I decided to buy a local paper.  I don’t normally read print news for a couple of reasons.  One, you tend to get newsprint all over your hands, and I don’t like that.  Two, I usually get sleepy when I read.  Of course, being the curious type, I had to check it out, right?

Today’s edition, (or is for the whole previous week?) had an insert about the high school’s 2007 graduating class, all 72 of them.  If there is another high school in the county, I’m not aware of it.  🙂  Actually, it was kind of neat because, evidently, there are some pretty smart kids around here, or maybe the school is fairly decent.  There were quite a few kids getting checks from various organization, and scholarships, one for $72,000.  That should probably cover about 15 minutes worth of college.  :/  I’d link to it, but it seems they don’t have a website.  sigh…

Actual ‘news’ was on the front page.  That was it….one page, out of 36.  Hmmm…  Oh sure, there was the required ‘who got busted for what’ section (the worst being someone cut someone else throat with a knife that didn’t require medical attention), numerous recipes (some looked pretty tasty too), quite a few help wanted ads and one op-ed page with a political cartoon from 7 May that was fairly amusing.   I wish I had a scanner.

Here’s a few highlights I found interesting: (no links, no website, so you’ll have to take my word for it)

Property appraisals up average 37 percent   -actually on the front page (Sounds like a lot doesn’t it?)

“State law says if appraisals go up, the property tax rate goes down”.  The current property tax rate is $1.82 per $100 of assessed value.  Given an average countywide increase in value of 37 percent, the certified property tax rate can be expected to be adjusted downward by about the same percentage or to around $1.15.

So, when the appraised value goes up, they adjust the tax to actually go down.  Cool!  🙂

6th annual free fishing rodeo is June 9   (Wonder if they use tiny lassos)

The Wildlife Resources Agency is promoting a free fishing rodeo sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources (TWRA), Maxie Jones, and Savannah Super Wal-Mart.

It’s a shame I don’t fish since it’s free for the entire state that day.  I guess, since this area is the “Catfish Capital”, it might be a good time NOT to be around?

Oh, and there’s an auction this Saturday, in case you are in need of a “good steel tired wagon wheel”, or maybe a “goat yoke”.  Perhaps you have need of a 4 gallon wooden keg?  How about a pole ax?

Don’t forget about the Buford Pusser Festival that kicks off this weekend in Adamsville with the Miss Buford Pusser pageant.  The official fest doesn’t actually start until next week, with the ever popular Adamsville Idol.

Ya just gotta love small town living!  🙂

  4. It’s a beautiful state, the people are extremely friendly, there is no state income tax, and property taxes are MUCH lower than Wisconsin. Not to mention there isn’t 2 feet of snow all winter long. 🙂 I have family in Texas and Virginia, my husband’s family is in Wisconsin. So, it’s central for both of us. And we LOVE this house!

  6. LOL Ya got that right. I just love it here! The downside, we get the local news out of Memphis, and it reminds me a LOT of Milwaukee. sigh… So, I don’t watch it too often. 🙂

I sure missed gossiping with you at this year’s convention.

Who in the world will I gossip with now?

  8. You know full well you are more than welcome! 🙂

Yeah, I had a tough time all that weekend realizing I was missing all the fun. 😦 Not to worry…just make sure we’re both at the national in California. The Mr. says he wants to go to play golf. LOL
