Event aids cancer research
Volunteers get their heads shaved for St. Baldrick’s Day at Buffalo Wild Wings

While the beer drinkers lining the bar at Buffalo Wild Wings toasted their favorite college basketball teams Saturday, Lois Williams sat quietly with her family, remembering those who saved her life.

While million of Americans used St. Patrick’s Day as a reason to party, Williams used the day to pay homage to those who helped her conquer cancer – and help today’s children battling the same disease.

This is a wonderful idea, kids need to know they aren’t alone. But it doesn’t mention what they do with the hair, do they make wigs for the young’uns when they lose their hair?

FdL County committee backs higher cigarette tax

Support for a sizeable increase in the cigarette excise tax and a statewide law banning smoking in all workplaces has been issued by the Fond du Lac County Board of Health.

Common sense has died in Fond du Lac. And here, I thought there were reasonable and intelligent people in that city. Guess I was wrong. A class in economics might be in order.

Clinton says her leadership would be more competent

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton praised residents of Houston yesterday for their help in responding to Hurricane Katrina and said that if elected she would lead a more competent government than the Bush administration.

Oh sure, she’d be competent alright. She’d be very good at sucking the life blood out of what makes this country great. If she gets elected, heaven forbid, plan on being a lot poorer.

Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones dies

Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones, who turned a stint selling seat cushions at the Cotton Bowl into a nationally recognizable role as an unofficial Dallas Cowboys mascot, has died.

I noticed he was missing from the last game I was able to watch. This is a loss for Dallas, in a big way. Prayers.

US Airways Passengers Who Reported ‘Suspicious’ Imam Activity May Be Sued

“I think there is a difference between someone reporting suspicious activity and someone making false reports about a fact that did not exist,” Mohammedi said. “We are not saying that people should not report; we are saying people should not abuse that process just because someone was praying or someone looked religious.”

“Someone looked religious”? Um, no, I don’t believe that’s what it was all about. If the courts don’t toss this suit, then perhaps they should be tossed instead.

China names new asteroids after space astronauts

The Purple Mountain Observatory under the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced it has named two asteroids after Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng, two astronauts from China’s second manned space mission in 2005.

They couldn’t name them something a little easier to pronounce, like Smith, or Jones? 🙂

Israel Won’t Work With Palestinian Gov’t

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday ruled out peace talks with the Palestinians, saying contacts will be limited to humanitarian issues until the new coalition government explicitly renounces violence and recognizes Israel’s right to exist.

Good luck with that one bud. :/

The great divide
Immigrants in Carpentersville feel sting of ‘English-only’ proposal

Now, like many other Hispanics living in far northwest suburban Carpentersville, a town of about 35,000, Ortega is scared.

She finds herself living in a place where she says she and others in the Hispanic community, which has grown from 16 percent to 40 percent of the population in the last 15 years, might one day be targeted by village ordinances that some say seek to curb the influx of illegal immigrants.

Hey, here’s a novel concept! How ’bout learning the language of the land and blending in, instead of putting barriers up by not assimilating? And the word is I-L-L-E-G-A-L!!
